Tips
on Completing the Parents' Financial Statement (PFS)
As families work to complete the Parents' Financial Statement
(PFS), the Penn Charter Financial Aid Office encourages you
to keep in mind the following:
General Guidelines
1. You should complete the Parent Financial Statement (PFS)
as soon as you can. Where necessary, estimate
information to the best of your ability, so that SSS responds
with their report as soon as possible.
2. Do not leave any items blank. If nothing to report, than
put a zero ("0") in the space.
3. Where the number or letter of an item is circled such as
9F, 11, 12C, 16A, 17, 18B, 19, 21, 22A, 22C, 23, 24, 26J,
27G, 27I, 29D and 29E, you must explain any unusual expenses
or circumstances in section 32, unless it is zero or does
not apply to you.
4. In the case of a family where the parents are divorced
and/or separated, income and asset information must be provided
for each, when both are involved in the support of the child.
If it proves difficult for both to fill out a separate PFS
form, then a note should be sent explaining the situation,
and tax forms must be sent to the school for the parent not
filing a PFS form.
Specific Items
Note: At the beginning of the form you can
include information for up to three student applicants to
independent schools (see "Student A, Student B and Student
C" in Part I, A). Be alert to various places on the form where
information is requested about each applicant.
#7A: We encourage you to receive your own report, though there
is a fee, since it will help you understand how they arrive
at your expected contribution. (Enter "Family Report" under
"School name" and the "SSS Code no." is "9000".) This is in
addition to listing all schools you wish to receive a report,
including the William Penn Charter School. Our SSS code is
8218.
#9C: If there is a number here, there must be something
in #20 and/or #21.
#9E: If there is a number here, there must be something
in #23 A, B, C.
#22A: Please look on page 7 in the "Instruction Booklet" for
those appropriate debts to enter here.
#22C: Please look on pages 6-7 in the "Instruction Booklet"
for those consumer debts appropriate to enter here.
#25A/B: Please be realistic as to what you can afford for
educational expenses, keeping in mind that there are no full
tuition grants of aid. You need to explore all possible family
resources in arriving at this figure.
Conclusion
1. If mailing the form, be sure to sign it and enclose a check
for processing. Note: Fill out the enclosed
postcard (attach stamp) to be notified that SSS received your
forms. Be sure to keep a copy for your records.
2. If there are any unusual family circumstances that need
explanation beyond the opportunity provided in the PFS, write
a letter and send it to me at Penn Charter.
