Senior Signs Book Deal,
Looks to 2008 Publication Date
Senior Elizabeth Golden has
signed a contract with Lobster Press to publish a book she
wrote about her recovery from a scoliosis operation.
Elizabeth started writing the
book in eighth grade while she was absent from Penn Charter
for a month recovering from surgery on her spine. She soon
decided she wanted to share her story with other children
and teens. Elizabeth believes the book will be of interest
to young people with scoliosis as well as others confronting
or recovering from major surgery or illness.
"So many people that get [scoliosis]
are looking for something to read about it," Elizabeth said.
"I met with an agent who wanted to help me realize what I
wanted to do with it because I wanted other people to have
access to it."
Elizabeth is represented by
the Helen Rees Literary Agency, a Boston group whose clients
include Alan Dershowitz, John Kerry and Vicki Lane. Elizabeth
received an offer from another publishing house, but with
her agent at Helen Rees she decided to sign with Lobster Press,
an award-winning children's publisher based in Canada.
Elizabeth has spent summers
editing the book and, with a lititle help from English teacher
Rachel Malhotra, turning memoir into novel. Knowing that the
title, "When Life Throws You a Curve," and even the fiction
format may change during the publishing process, Elizabeth
is busy working on the manuscript as part of her Senior Comprehensive
Project.
Elizabeth will attend Yale University
in September 2007. Lobster Press expects to release the book
in 2008.
