Penn Charter Takes the Day; Football Win Thrills PC Fans

Penn Charter captured the Competition Cup for the 121st PC/GA Day with one tie and four victories, including an exhilarating win on the final play of the football game.

With just 32 seconds left in the fourth quarter of the football game, GA's Dan Lipschutz kicked a 42-yard field goal to put GA ahead 24-21.

Germantown's fans cleared the stands and ran to a gate in the fence, prepared to pour onto Penn Charter's field to celebrate what seemed like a sure victory.

But the game was far from over.

Eddie Bambino returned the kickoff, and PC quarterback John Ryan got off a quick pass to Dylan Moody. On the next play, Ryan spiked the ball. Then, with 9.6 seconds remaining, Ryan hit Blaise Fullen with a pass. Fullen caught the pass around the 30 yard line and was quickly surrounded by the GA defense. As he was going down, Fullen lateraled to Bambino. Bambino ran down the sideline and scored as time ran out.

The GA fans fell silent and, instead, Penn Charter's stands emptied and the field filled with cheering players, coaches, students and families. Bambino and Reed Marko of GA shared the Joseph Geis Award as game MVPs.

GA suffered a disappointment in field hockey, too. That game went into overtime tied 0-0, and it ended in a scoreless tie. A win against PC would have given the GA girls the Inter-Academic championship. Penn Charter's Sara Henley shared the MVP trophy with Mary Haynie of GA.

"There had to be an exciting game or two among the 120 played over the years between Germantown Academy and Penn Charter, but few could compare to the ending of the latest installment of the longest-running high school rivalry in the nation."
The Philadelphia Inquirer
