Boys and Girls Teams Medal, Break School Records at Relays
The 4 x 400 meter relay teams
from Penn Charter - both the girls and the boys - excelled
at the 112th Penn Relays.
Penn Charter's boys, Kashif
Smith, Shawn David, Dareem David and Kamal Marell ran a time
of 3:25.78 to capture first place in the 4 x 400 Meter Relay
in the Inter-Ac heat on April 29.
And, later the same day, they
returned to run 3:23:34 - a new school record - and finish
third in the Philadelphia Area Championship Heat, a race that
included independent, parochial and public schools in the
tri-state region. The same team was sixth at the Nike National
Indoor Meet in March in the 4 x 200 Meter Relay.
Marell, a senior at Penn Charter
who will attend Clemson University in September, also qualified
for the 400 meter intermediate hurdles championship and placed
10th, running 55.37, also a new school record. The David twins
are only in 9th grade. Smith, a 10th grader, is the brother
of the sprinter who ran the first leg in the girls race.
Khaaleedah Smith, Lisa Fugelo,
JaLia Moody and Sierra Tishgart took second place in the Prep
School Girls' 4 x 400 meter relay at Penn with a new school
record of 4:09.10. The team ran the fastest time of any Philadelphia-area
private school. The entire girls team returns for next season.
"We were delighted that both
the boys and girls had such a great performance at the Penn
Relays," said boys head coach Stephen A. Bonnie.
