Penn Charter Digs in to Help Plant Trees in East Falls

Photos

Penn Charter students joined a group of volunteers to plant 38 trees along the 3100 and 3200 blocks of Midvale Avenue and Queen Lane as part of a citywide effort to increase Philadelphia's tree canopy.

Cynthia Kishinchand of Tree Tenders, quoting statistics from Gov. Rendell's office, reports that the five-county Philadelphia region has lost more than 5 million trees over the last 15 years. Kishinchand says that the tree canopy in East Falls is 11 percent; Mayor Nutter's goal for the city is a 30 percent tree canopy.

The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society coordinated Saturday's city wide effort, which was designed to plant approximately 580 trees throughout Philadelphia.
