The pre-kindergarten program at William Penn Charter School recognizes that young children learn best when they feel safe, loved and respected. The oldest Friends school in the world, Penn Charter affirms the Quaker belief that there is "that of God" in everyone. Every person has gifts, and every learner has strengths and differences that are shared and valued within our community. Teachers and children work collaboratively in a cooperative, interpersonal spirit. Honoring the dignity of each individual, children are encouraged to voice their thoughts and feelings and to listen to those of their peers. Compromise and sharing become key components in finding peaceful resolutions to conflicts. Our goal is for children to experience the joy of working, playing and being together as they begin their journey as lifelong learners.

Comprehensive Goals

The comprehensive goals of our program are:

  • Fostering "habits of mind"
  • Providing different approaches to learning
  • Nurturing social and emotional development
  • Enhancing children's cognitive understanding of their world
  • Expanding children's repertoire of skills
  • Developing language
  • Caring for children's physical well-being and motor development

Our Facility

View of Pre-K looking through a doorwayWe have entered into partnership with the Memorial Church of the Good Shepherd to use once-vacant classroom and nursery school space. The location of the church on The Oak Road offers a comfortable neighborhood setting in a church that has been part of the East Falls community for more than 80 years. Because the church backs up to our own campus, it also provides easy access to all of Penn Charter's resources.

Our new 5,300-square-foot pre-kindergarten is a light-filled space designed for playing and learning. The space has two classrooms, an arts studio and a large activity room that can be used as an indoor play space. The facility includes an office, a full kitchen, bathroom facilities and a new outdoor play area directly outside the building.
