Upper School Visual Arts seeks to provide students with opportunities to:

  • Identify personally and socially meaningful subjects for creative work in the visual arts
  • Explore a variety of strategies and approaches to posing and solving problems
  • Work both independently and collaboratively on creative projects
  • Build skills in both traditional and digital media
  • Understand the creative process in all disciplines through observation, study and practice
  • Participate in integrated models of learning, which connect creative, academic and life experiences
  • Relate the experience of the classroom to the realities of the multicultural world
  • Develop awareness of contemporary art issues
  • Cultivate certain habits of mind, including: persistence, setting challenging goals, meeting deadlines, and using organizational skills pertaining to time, work space and resources
  • Reflect on their own learning, analyze personal strengths and weaknesses, and accept constructive criticism
  • Assemble portfolios for further education in the visual arts

The Visual Arts department also seeks to support teachers and students in their individual and interdisciplinary projects involving the visual arts.
