INSTRUCTIONS FOR MIDDLE AND UPPER SCHOOL
In the Penn Charter Upper and Middle Schools, book distribution is accomplished through online or telephone ordering. The school contracts for this service with MBS Direct, a textbook vendor serving thousands of students nationwide.
MBS Direct will maintain a current list of our courses and the books/materials for those courses. Please note that the school provides textbooks for some courses. Therefore, if a course is not listed on the MBS site, no purchase is necessary for that course.
Here's how the system works:
Beginning Aug. 10, parents should visit the MBS Direct Virtual Bookstore. (You can also find a link to it on the School Store page of Penn Charter's website.) Order from August 10-16, 2016 and get free shipping on purchases $99 and over through the online bookstore. Families may also order from MBS by phone at 800-325-3252.
Middle School parents will be able to buy books by identifying a child's grade. Parents of all sixth grade students should order all the books listed on MBS. Parents of seventh and eighth grade students should refer to the course list for each student and purchase the books that correspond to the course and section numbers, including the appropriate language books. Please note that seventh and eighth grade students take some “special” quarter classes; parents should order books for all four quarters of the school year to insure that students have the books they need on the first day of each of those classes.
Upper School parents should consult the course list for their student(s) and purchase the books that correspond to the course and section numbers. We strongly recommend that you buy all books for full-year and one-semester courses before school begins in September. If you choose not to, please make a note to buy books for the second semester well in advance of the first day of those sessions. Penn Charter does not send reminders about book purchasing.
MBS accepts payment by Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express. Personal checks are accepted for phone orders.
Orders will be shipped within 24 hours.
We recommend the Virtual Bookstore because it is more accessible and economical than telephone orders: it can be accessed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and offers a 20 percent discount on UPS air shipping. If you choose to order by phone, MBS operators are available during the following times: Monday-Thursday, 8am to 11pm; Friday, 8am to 7pm; Saturday, 9am to 6pm; Sunday, 1pm to 5pm.
In addition to the convenience of having books mailed to the home in advance of the first day of school, benefits of the online and telephone distribution system include:
USED BOOKS: MBS textbook buyers make every effort to maximize the number of used books available, usually at 25 percent savings.
DELIVERY: Textbooks are delivered via UPS by one of three methods: ground, second-day air or next-day air. Shipping costs are based on the weight of the package and the delivery zip code. (Federal Express and Priority Mail are also available.)
TEXTBOOK BUYBACK: Two weeks prior to the end of trimester, families that purchased books from MBS will receive a letter or e-mail listing the price MBS will pay for used textbooks that have resale value. A prepaid shipping label will be included for convenience in sending the books back for resale. Parents also may phone MBS to determine the current value of a book. MBS will send a check directly to parents for the value of any books the company purchases in buy-back.
Parents may direct questions to School Store manager Dutch Schrap at 215-844-3460 ext. 143.
