Memories from 1938 to 1950

In first grade (1938), our teacher, Miss Tennis, was tough but fair. I remember experiencing this characteristic one day when I was not keeping my crayons inside the lines in the coloring book! As a result, I had to stay after school until I did it correctly. The real embarrassment came when my father arrived to take me home and had to sit on the wooden bench in the hall outside my classroom ... waiting until I was dismissed.

Grace Campbell, Isabel Chapman, Ralph Evans, John GummereIn third grade, our teacher was Miss Chapman (pictured, second from left), a good all-around teacher. When the measles epidemic began to wipe out our classmates, I remember going home each day with the exact diminishing number in attendance each day. Finally, I was so excited when we were down to two present! But then, the next day, I woke up with the measles!

$100,000 Match Update!

We met the $100,000 match!

Chief Development Officer Jack Rogers Hon. 1689, a parent of three OPC daughters, announced that we've reached the $100,000 dollar-for-dollar match! That means that – through the generosity of that anonymous $100,000 donor and gifts from more than 150 supporters today – we've raised $200,000 so far on this Great Day to Be a Penn Charter Quaker.

THANK YOU! Watch Jack's announcement.

Midnight Challenge

A second anonymous donor has laid down a second challenge. If more than 300 donors make a gift before midnight tonight, Penn Charter will unlock a $20,000 gift! With 150 donors so far, we're halfway there.

The Blue-Yellow Challenge continues! The team totals are almost identical right now, but who will come out on top? Jack predicts Blue, but as a dad of three on the Blue team, he's biased!

You can make your gift here.

We can do it! #GoCharter!

Memories of Ralph "Bugsy" Evans

John Skinner OPC '67 (at left, on vacation with his wife) wrote in with memories of Ralph "Bugsy" Evans, one of his many favorite teachers.

Ralph “ Bugsy” Evans was my Biology teacher. He was the best and I was fortunate enough, with my classmate Bob Hendrix, to take a nature tour with him to the South Jersey shore. There he introduced to a new cheese that he claimed was very “Gouda."

Among other things showed us was a Venus Flytrap which we found quite cool. We also saw the largest group of Bald Eagles I have ever seen. He was fun and he made the trip and adventure.

My other memory of Bugsy Evans was that if he asked you a question in class, and your answer was full of you-know-what!, he would pretend to shovel.  And if you did it on a test, he would draw a vacuum cleaner next to your answer. He, like my other teachers, was one of a kind.

I am quite proud to be a graduate of as fine a school as there is. The honor system truly worked and I am proud to be a part of the Penn Charter Story.

A Blue-Yellow Challenge on Great Day

A generous donor has challenged the Blue and Yellow teams to work together to reach $100,000 on Great Day to Be a Penn Charter Quaker. Each gift made on Great Day, up to $100,000, will be matched dollar-for-dollar!

Where does the Blue-Yellow Challenge come in, you ask? When you make a gift at penncharter.com/give, you will have the option to choose which team your child is on or you were on when a student. For current families, review the Blue-Yellow teams by grade here to check your color. You can watch each team's progress here on our Great Day blog in a joint race to the top!

Not on a team or can't remember which you were? That's ok! You can designate whichever color you'd like when you make your gift, or none at all.

How fast can we get there?
