Dropping in on Dr. Hughes

Teacher, coach, college counselor, department chair. In her time at Penn Charter, Erin Hughes has worn many hats and mastered many tasks. Next year she will step down as chair of the English department to take on a new role, dean for 11th and 12th grade.

She will continue to teach, of course, and to work one-to-one with students eager to learn more about writing.

Mr. Ballengee's Final Year?

After 42 years of teaching, Jim Ballengee is as passionate about government, politics and service as the iconic teacher you remember from your PC school days. Just listen to him talking about the War on Poverty.

Mr. Ballengee is retiring at the end of the school year. We know he will still find a way to stay involved, and make a difference.

Not Easy Keeping Up with Kamal

Kamal Marell OPC '06 is back in the classroom – interning as a PC Middle School social studies teacher – and back on the track as a coach to a new crop of PC runners.

Ten years ago, as a captain of Doc Bonnie's 2006 Inter-Ac champion team, Marell was known for his speed (and his tights). He won the Greenwood award, given to the most outstanding performer in the championship meet, four years in a row. He set an Inter-Ac record for the 110m hurdles in 13.9, set a new Penn Charter mark of 49.8 seconds in the 400 meter run and anchored the team – which included speedsters Kashif Smith and twins Shawn and Dareem David – that broke Penn Charter's records in the 4x200 and the 4x100 meter relays.

Doc, how is it to have one of your runners back on the track?

"We are proud to have one of our finest sons back in the program where he
belongs. He is not only a Penn Charter track legend – he is a great role model
for whole new generation of Penn Charter students."

We Have A New Challenge!

Jack Rogers Hon. 1689 gives us an update from the Senior Stairs.

Thanks to so many generous OPCs, parents, faculty and staff, we've raised more than $20,000 and met the $20,000 dollar-for-dollar match from a generous Overseer!

And it is definitely a Great Day to Be a Quaker because another Overseer has just issued a new challenge to Penn Charter. If a total of 250 donors give on Great Day, we will unlock his gift of $25,000!

We know we can do it, but we need your help! Visit www.penncharter.com/give today to support Penn Charter and help us meet this challenge!

Thank you to all for making every day a Great Day to be a Penn Charter Quaker!

Dodger Down! A Middle School Production

By now most people know that The Goldbergs, created by Adam Goldberg OPC '94, features a few characters based on Penn Charter faculty, who, in the show, teach at Penn Charter Academy.

Inspired by The Goldbergs, PC middle school students dreamed up a coulple clips of their own. This one features the very popular Dodger Down game and longtime teacher Rick Mellor.
