A History of Access

William Penn founded Penn Charter for all people — and that is as true today as it was in 1689. Learn how our history of access shaped Penn Charter.

A Classic Education:
Timeless, Original, Valuable

A classic education has always been about gaining the keys to knowledge to unlock any door. In short, access to the world.

The difference at Penn Charter is that along with classic academic keys, we give students a Quaker moral compass to guide them and friends of all backgrounds with whom to travel and explore the world. We integrate the power of arts and athletics into a vigorous academic experience. We give students a culture of service and leadership in which to grow.

Classically educated, only better.

Why Penn Charter?

Scholarship and Innovation: In pursuit of academic excellence, our teachers invite their students into a dynamic quest for new ideas. Each classroom, studio, stage and playing field becomes a challenging and supportive environment in which students' best insights have room to emerge and thrive.

Opportunities in Academics, Arts, Athletics and Service: Students at Penn Charter are urged to explore their potential in a myriad of ways. The school hums with activity from 7 a.m. until well into the evening with students and teachers engaged in dozens of clubs, performance opportunities, service projects, sports teams and after-school enrichment.

Distinctive Teaching, Distinguished Teachers: Our teachers have been recognized as some of the best in the nation; 68 percent have advanced degrees. An enviable student-teacher ratio, extraordinary resources and a strong professional development program allow teachers to stay current in their fields and cutting-edge in their classrooms.

A Tradition of Diversity: Penn Charter's diverse student body is central to the school's unique character. The socioeconomic, racial, ethnic, religious and geographic diversity at PC fosters heterogeneous friendships and creates classroom energy as even our youngest students share the perspectives of different cultures and experiences.

Our Quaker Values: Penn Charter, the oldest Quaker school in the world, affirms the Quaker principles that are at the foundation of a Friends school: honesty, simplicity, integrity, respect, equality, nonviolence, self-discipline and community.

A Real Campus in the City: Penn Charter is a quick trip from Center City Philadelphia, the Main Line and all of Philadelphia's neighborhoods and suburbs. Our 44-acre, green and open campus feels like the suburbs but gives us easy access to one of the world's most complex and exciting cities.
