Girls Lax Off to Slow Start

Junior Avery Shoemaker scored five goals in last Tuesday’s Inter-Ac League lacrosse match, but host SCH generated a lot more offense overall and the Blue Devils notched a 19-10 victory.

SCH, led 11-3 at the half, but Penn Charter, which netted half of its points in the final eight minutes, made a valiant comeback. Mark down a hat trick for freshman Courtney Cubbin, but the loss in their Inter-Ac opener dropped the Quakers to an overall mark of 1-3. Junior goalie Maddie Mahoney made nine stops for Charter.

Kudos to Sean, Izzy and Mr. McCloskey!

Congratulations to senior Sean O'Brien on his recent honor earning the prestigious Markward Award for the Inter-Ac Boys Basketball Player of the Year. Check out the recent article in the Chestnut Hill Local: http://chestnuthilllocal.com/blog/2014/03/31/penn-charter-obrien-photo-caption/.

Congratulations to former coach and current Dean of Students Brian McCloskey OPC '82 for his induction into the City Chapter of the Pennsylvania Athletic Hall of Fame! Coach McCloskey lead the Quaker football team as head coach for 13 years, winning 8 Inter-Ac titles. He also was the PC starting QB for three years, earning All Inter-Ac and All City honors before going to Ursinus College. At Ursinus he started at QB for four years helping return the program to a winning tradition.

Congratulations to Isabel Hirshberg on earning All American US Squash honors. Check out the press release: http://www.ussquash.com/all-americans-announced/.

PC Offers Cardiac Screening

Register for Penn Charter Cardiac Screening Day
Sunday, Dec. 15, 8 am-4 pm, Field House

Simon's Fund, a local nonprofit organization that was behind the passage of Pennsylvania's Sudden Cardiac Arrest Prevention Act, will be providing free heart screenings for Penn Charter students (not just athletes), ages 10–19, on Sunday, Dec. 15, in PC's Dooney Field House. Students from Germantown Academy, Germantown Friends and Springside Chestnut Hill Academy are also invited. Simon's Fund was established in 2005 in memory of Simon Sudman, the three-month-old son of Phyllis and Darren Sudman who died of a heart arrhythmia that causes sudden cardiac arrest and death. Learn more about sudden cardiac arrest in this public service announcement on the website.

You must register for an appointment for your child or children, ages 10-19, to be screened. A parent or guardian must accompany the student to the screening. We hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity. If you have any questions about the screening, please contact PC nurse Debra Foley, PC athletic trainer Tom Yabor or Darren Sudman.

We need your help. We are looking for adult volunteers to work during the cardiac screening event in non-medical roles in shifts of two or preferably four hours. Volunteers will be asked to work the registration and check-out desk and to direct students to appropriate stations. Please sign up here. Contact Debra Foley with any questions.

Go Charter!

The size, complexity and success of athletics at Penn Charter are evident on a fall or spring afternoon when the fields are pulsing with players, coaches, officials and fans and the air carries the sound of cheering, an umpire's whistle or the crack of a bat on a baseball.

The numbers tell some of the story, too.

The Stats

620 students playing sports

125 coaches

26 varsity teams

44 acres: 6 grass playing fields, 1 synthetic turf field, 1 all-weather track, 7 tennis courts, 10 squash courts, 4 basketball courts, 1 swimming pool

4 buildings designated for athletics: Kline & Specter Squash Center, Graham Athletics Center, Ray Dooney Field House, Old Gym
