Cancer Conference & Big Climb Kickoff
Posted 01/14/2016 12:33PM

Penn Charter will present a Cancer Conference on Saturday, Jan. 30, to explore the latest in cancer education and research and to kick off Big Climb Philly, a regional fundraiser Penn Charter is championing with Comcast and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). (Please note new date: postponed from Saturday, Jan. 23!!)
Designed for Middle and Upper School students and interested adults, the Cancer Conference will feature presentations from oncology specialists and survivors. The full agenda for the 10 am to 2pm program appears below.

The Cancer Conference also will begin the countdown to Big Climb Philly, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s inaugural stair climb to the top of Philadelphia’s tallest skyscraper. The Comcast Center will host this April 23 fundraiser, providing an opportunity for 1,500 people to test themselves on the 43-flight event course in support of the LLS mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

Duncan Glew, a PC ninth grader in treatment for leukemia, is working with a team of PC students to promote the Big Climb event and organize Penn Charter students, parents and OPCs to participate.

Duncan knows all about the Big Climb. He was a star volunteer for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in Seattle, where the original Big Climb started 30 years ago; Big Climb Seattle raised more than $5 million last year. When the Glew family moved to Philadelphia so that Duncan could be treated by doctors at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Duncan was determined to spread that success and establish a Big Climb here.

He worked behind-the-scenes to help establish the event and has put in place a student committee to energize Penn Charter’s Big Climb Philly team.

The registration fee for the Big Climb is $35 — but an OPC has offered to pay the registration fee for PC-connected climbers who sign up for Big Climb Philly at the Cancer Conference on Jan. 23.

To donate but not climb: Follow the link and instructions and select either the “Donate Now” button or the “Donate to a Team Member” button. “Donate now” distributes the amount donated equally amongst all the members of the PC team. “Donate to a team member” gives the money to a specific team member.
