After seven years as director of Lower School, David Kern will retire and embark on new adventures.
At a Drop and Stop in Chigwell Close on a sunny Thursday morning, Lower School parents and others celebrated David Kern's tenure and impact on students.
Fifth graders Alyssa L. and Ellie C. shared a speech highlighting what they and their peers recognize and appreciate about Kern.
"You have made us who we are today, and you have a very contagious attitude. You found time to walk into our classrooms just to see what we were doing, and you loved to hear all about it. Also, you spent time talking to and getting to know each one of us individually. Even though you sometimes dress up as a wizard for Halloween, that's different than what we mean. We’re talking about the kind of magic that creates a happy, joyful and amazing school," Alyssa and Ellie said. Watch their full speech here.
Olivia F. and Amanda R. sang a beautiful rendition of "For Good" from the musical Wicked for the crowd. Watch a short clip of their performance here. Bringing tears to many eyes, the song lyrics include,
It well may be
That we will never meet again
In this lifetime
So let me say before we part
So much of me
Is made of what I learned from you
You'll be with me
Like a handprint on my heart...
Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
But because I knew you.
To close the ceremony, David Kern spoke to those gathered. With emotion in his voice, Kern thanked parents and others in Lower School for the good teamwork during his tenure. "I remember saying a lot early on how important working as a team between the parent and the school is. And you have been there for me, been there for the school, been there for your children. And that has made a good school a great school," said Kern.
"Most of all what is in my heart is so much caring and thanks to all of you for the support." Watch the full remarks here.
