Holi at Penn Charter

Holi at Penn Charter

On Friday, March 14, Penn Charter students celebrated Holi, a major Hindu festival known as the Festival of Colours, Love, Equality and Spring. The holiday celebrates the eternal and divine love of the deities Radha and Krishna, as well as the triumph of good over evil. Students enjoyed delicious Indian food, including pastries known as gujhia, dosai, and curry. Then they engaged in the playful tradition of tossing colored powders (abir) at each other.

According to Hindu mythology, Radha was very pale and Lord Krishna had a darker complexion. Krishna often worried about whether Radha would accept him due to his dark skin, and complained to his mother Yashoda. Yashoda once suggested that Krishna paint Radha's face a different colour to hide any differences, which Krishna did, using abir to smear Radha's face.
