Football Captures Milestone 700th Win

As summer draws to a close, another exciting season of fall athletics is already well underway. Three Quaker teams traveled to Ocean City, NJ, this weekend to face off against Lansdale Catholic in the fifth annual Battle at the Beach.

Football celebrated an historic 700th all-time win for the PC program after defeating the Crusaders by a score of 41-20. It was the Quakers' fourth straight victory in the Battle at the Beach Labor Day weekend contest.

Both football teams had eventful opening drives. Colin Schumm intercepted a tipped ball by Aaron Maione to set up the Quakers' opening drive. The interception was the result of great pressure on the Lansdale QB, with Jameson Ford and Gavin Zavorski nailing the QB on his release. The Quakers couldn't capitalize and two plays later fumbled it back to LC. Lansdale took an early three-point lead, but Penn Charter drove downfield and quarterback Kyle Jones scored his first of four rushing TDs of the day, this one from 19 yards out. Jones, a standout LB on defense, ended the day with 18 carries for 176 yards. Senior Ryan Bradby would finish the day 5-5 on PATts and two-for-two on field goals (36 yards and 39 yards). The Quakers did not trail after Jones's first TD. Matt Marshall had an impressive day, rushing 23 times for 226 yards (1 TD) in his debut replacing Penn Charter's all-time leading rusher Eddie Saydee. The Quakers' defense settled in after an up-and-down first half to hold LC to a single touchdown in the second. Eddie Guarnaccia sealed the victory with an interception with under five minutes remaining in the game. The team celebrated victory number 700 with family and friends on the field following the game, and coach Tom Coyle was presented with a game ball commemorating the 700th win. Penn Charter's all-time record now stands at 700-370-52.  

Next Friday, Quakers football travels to Harry S. Truman High School (Levittown) for a night game against Conwell-Egan. Kickoff at 7 pm.

 

Girls soccer dominated on the field, but ended up in a 1-1 double OT tie. Senior Sara Shipon scored the game's first goal early in the second half, but Lansdale managed to sneak one past PC goalkeeper Riley McDade on a penalty kick. The PC girls will look to defend their Inter-Ac title this year after a dominant 2018 season. Next, they travel to Archbishop Wood on Wednesday, Sept. 4.

Boys soccer lost to Lansdale 1-0 after holding its own through a scoreless first half. Back in Philadelphia, the boys are hosting Summit Country Day School (Ohio) on Maguire Field this Sunday, Sept. 1 at 1 pm.

 

Golf opened its season at Philadelphia Country Club on Thursday, losing to St. Joe's Prep by a score of 194-220. Penn Charter's juniors led the pack: Patrick Isztwan finished the nine-hole par-35 course in 36 strokes, and Josh Felter finished in 42. The Quakers tee off against Father Judge on Wednesday, Sept. 4, at Huntingdon Valley Country Club.
