SportsZone Roundup: July 2019

School's out but Penn Charter students and OPCs have been staying active on the playing fields. Read about some off-season athletics highlights in this July SportsZone Roundup.

Julia Veith (above) earned a third-place finish at the 2019 USRowing National Championships in Bethel, Ohio earlier this month. Veith, a rising junior, competed in the under-17 girls doubles race as a member of the Whitemarsh Boat Club; she and her sculling partner advanced to the event after winning first place at USRowing's inaugural U17 National Championship in June. During the Quakers' exceptional 2019 season, Veith was one of three PC boats to compete in the SRAA Nationals, also in Ohio, where she finished fifth in the girls varsity singles race as a sophomore.

Brendan Cellucci OPC '17 (right), who was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 12th round of this year's MLB draft, officially signed with the team on July 11. Cellucci's ascent to the major league comes on the heels of an excellent sophomore season as a top relief pitcher at Tulane.

The dedication of the PC football team's summer workout crew paid off in unexpected ways when the group received two high-profile visitors this month. San Francisco 49ers lineman Mike McGlinchey OPC '13 (below)stopped by Maguire Field to impart some words of wisdom to his former team before heading back to the west coast for training camp. McGlinchey's Penn Charter classmate Daryl Worley OPC '13 (bottom) was in town a few days later and took time to toss a ball around with the Quakers and answer questions about his work as a cornerback for the Oakland Raiders.
