About Penn Charter

William Penn Charter School was established in 1689 by William Penn and members of the Religious Society of Friends and is guided by five core Quaker values—simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality, stewardship—and a commitment to excellence in academics, arts and athletics. These tenets are taught, modeled and lived by our community, a place that celebrates diversity, promotes social justice and fosters respect for all individuals.

Our Campus

Penn Charter rests on a sprawling, green 47-acre campus in the East Falls section of Philadelphia. We are easily accessible from Center City, New Jersey, and the surrounding counties via public transportation and major roadways. We are located at 3000 West School House Lane, Philadelphia, PA 19144

Employee Benefits

William Penn Charter School offers a robust benefits package that affirms the school’s commitment to supporting our employees. We believe in investing in our employees' growth and provide them with competitive compensation, diverse professional development opportunities, and health and wellness benefits, including medical, family leave, retirement and tuition remission.

Medical Plans

Penn Charter is a PAISBOA (Philadelphia Area Independent School Business Officers Association) Health Benefit Trust member. Our employees have access to a collection of comprehensive health care benefits designed to keep you and your enrolled family members healthy. Independence Blue Cross is our partner for medical benefits, prescription drug coverage and innovative wellness offerings, including a new program to provide expanded family-forming benefits. This program supports our inclusive and diverse employee population through fertility, adoption and surrogacy benefits.

Dental Plans

Penn Charter employees have access to any dentist of their choice through our dental PPO plan offered through United Concordia. The basic plan provides 100% coverage for diagnostic, preventive and endodontic benefits. The enhanced plan offers 100% coverage for diagnostic and preventive, basic, endodontic benefits and oral surgery. Periodontics, crowns, onlays, prosthodontic and orthodontic benefits are covered at 50%.

Life Insurance

Penn Charter offers two plans: one group term life for which the school pays 100% of the cost and the benefit is 1x annual salary to a maximum benefit of $112,000 to your beneficiary. A voluntary life insurance benefit is also available, in which employees buy additional insurance for themselves, their spouses and their children. UNUM is our carrier for life insurance.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)

Short- and Long-Term Disability

The school pays employees 100% pay during the short-term disability period, which is 30, 60 or 90 days, depending on the length of service. The school also pays 100% of the long-term disability premium, which begins on day 91. On day 91, the salary goes down to 60%. On day 91, if the employee is still out, they will be paid 60% of their salary by the long-term disability insurance carrier.

Retirement Plans

The school offers a retirement plan whereby eligible employees receive an 8% contribution to their retirement plan and a 2% flexible, benefit which can be applied towards retirement, medical premiums or compensation. This is a contribution, not a match, which means it is made regardless of whether the employee contributes. Employees also have access to a voluntary supplemental 403(b) and a Roth 403(b) plan. All contributions are 100% vested from day one. TIAA-CREF is our vendor for retirement programs.

Teaching Fellowships

The Independent School Teaching Fellows Program of Greater Philadelphia is a multi-school collaborative with a two-year Teaching Fellowship program that seeks to increase both the presence of and opportunities for aspiring educators from diverse backgrounds and underrepresented identities in independent schools.

The program is designed to provide Teaching Fellows with opportunities to work and train in a variety of independent school settings in the greater Philadelphia region. Teaching Fellows are paired with a mentor teacher and placed with one of our school partners each semester.

Since graduating from Penn Charter (OPC ’10), the words ‘live lives that make a difference’ have continued to guide me, both personally and professionally. It has inspired me to become a teacher and ultimately led me back to the school that made such a profound difference in my own life. The teachers, coaches, and members of the Penn Charter community have helped shape who I am today and have shown me the importance of investing in others. Now, as an educator, I feel fortunate to give back to this community by helping students discover their passions, build confidence, overcome challenges, and recognize their ability to make a difference in the world. While the impact we have as teachers is not always immediately visible, seeing students grow into individuals who positively influence the lives of others reminds me why this work matters. For me, ‘live lives that make a difference’ is more than a school motto; it is a philosophy I strive to embody every day and one I hope to inspire in the next generation of Penn Charter students.
