Mathematics

Understanding not just the how, but the why.

We strive to develop persistent, confident and creative problem solvers who see and appreciate both the beauty and the utility in mathematics. Critical thinking, deep understanding and communication are the cornerstones of our mathematics program.

We celebrate mistakes in our classes as opportunities to learn and grow. The faculty are committed to instilling a growth mindset in our students and sharing the joy of mathematics in each learning exercise. Douglas Gorham, Math Department Chair

Lower School

In the Lower School, we strengthen student learning through productive struggle, requiring students to think critically, explore different approaches and persevere in finding solutions. It's a deliberate grappling with unclear concepts or problems that leads to deeper understanding and long-term retention, rather than rote memorization. Highlights:

  • We use a variety of methods of teaching, including hands-on learning with manipulatives.
  • We utilize small groups to meet the needs of all students.
  • We use project-based learning to enhance our math curriculum and provide real-life applicable math challenges.

Middle School

The mathematics department provides every middle school student with an appropriate level of both intellectual challenge and success. Opportunities include:

  • Participating in Math Counts, pitting themselves against middle schoolers from all over the country.
  • Pi Day, which we celebrate each year with pi-related classroom and library activities, a fundraising bake sale and a can drive for causes the students prioritize.

Upper School

In the Upper School we want each student to feel challenged and successful, so we provided an individualized approach. This includes:

  • extra help provided through the Math Center for students who need it
  • cutting edge courses such as Advanced Studies: Statistics and Data Science, Mathematics of Finance and Sports Analytics
  • advanced courses including Linear Algebra and Multivariable Calculus
  • opportunities to participate in our Math Club, which has placed in the top 10 in Pennsylvania Math League and Arete Labs Math Madness Competitions.
