Certificate Programs

In 10th grade, students may apply to one of three certificate programs. The certificate program is for students who are looking to integrate different aspects of the Upper School program around a particular focus and passion in their junior and senior years.
Through the pursuit of a certificate, students will integrate coursework, projects, activities and a Senior Project around a particular theme.
The certificate program exemplifies how students at PC develop as “explorers." Driven by internal curiosity rather than external expectations, they investigate the questions that matter to them and persist in achieving their goals. Certificate programs seek to develop the following skills and competencies.
Certificate Themes
Certificate in Global Cultures and Language
Global competency is defined as the capacity and disposition to understand and act on issues of global significance (Boix Mansilla & Jackson, 2011). As part of their work towards certification, students will work to build critical thinking skills in order to investigate our world and recognize the diverse perspectives necessary to face issues of global significance.
Certificate in Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability
This certificate builds upon our Quaker testimony of stewardship and aims to build the critical thinking skills needed to explore the complex issues of environmental sustainability. Through coursework and real world engagement, students will build the necessary capacities to find solutions to our collective environmental challenges.
Certificate in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice
This certificate track seeks to build upon the Quaker testimonies of community, equality and peace by exploring the complex and intersecting issues of diversity, equity, inclusion and justice. This interdisciplinary investigation will aid students in developing the mindset and skills needed to build a sense of belonging for all, to strengthen our community and our society, and to transform lives.
The Global Cultures and Languages Certificate gives me the resources to dive deep into what fascinates me through hands-on experience, mentorship and leadership that is not often provided in traditional classrooms. Through activity hours, projects and work experience, I have been able to connect my interests to master skills and share my passions with my community.

Key Characteristics
There are four main components to all certificate work. Students must make adequate progress, as determined by the certificate coordinator and assistant director of Upper School, in order to remain in the certificate program.
