Recipient: Brent Sherwood, OPC '76
Brent Sherwood is a space architect, writer and consultant who is now retired from full-time professional work. In 2024, he served as space domain lead for the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). From 2019 to 2023, he was senior vice president at Blue Origin, where he built and led a billion-dollar portfolio of programs. These included development of the lunar Human Landing System, Orbital Reef commercial space station, Blue Ring robotic orbital vehicle, Blue Alchemist lunar resource technology, and other internal in-space flight systems.
Sherwood worked at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) from 2005 to 2019, initially as the founding manager of the JPL Innovation Foundry and later as program manager for Solar System Mission Formulation. From 1988 to 2005, at the Boeing Company, he led efforts in human and robotic planetary exploration formulation, space station module manufacturing methods, and new business development for Sea Launch, the International Space Station and civil space programs.
Sherwood has published more than 90 papers on space exploration and development and served as editor of Out of This World: The New Field of Space Architecture. He is an academician of the International Academy of Astronautics and an associate fellow of AIAA. In 2021, he received the American Society of Civil
Engineers’ Columbia Medal. He has also served as chair of the AIAA Space Architecture Technical Committee and as a board member of the American Astronautical Society, and he is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
