It was an outstanding week for the Penn Charter cross country program. After winning the Inter-Ac championships on Monday, both girls teams went on to dominate the PAISAA championships at Belmont Plateau on Saturday, while the varsity boys team finished in a strong fourth place.
At PAISAA, the varsity girls team outpaced 11 other schools and placed seven runners in the top 20. Sophomore Emma Zwall finished fifth overall with a time of 19:52.7 and earned first team all-state honors. Zwall won the Inter-Ac outright on Monday. Also in the top 20 at PAISSA were Senior Mary McDavid (10th), freshman Julia Dolce (12th), senior Abby Zwall (13th), freshman Lane Murray (16th), junior Alicia Newman (18th) and junior Sophia Solomon (20th). The JV girls team beat four other schools and took three of the top five spots: freshman Olivia Montini finished first, freshman Elena Coupas finished second, senior Haley Joyce finished third and senior Isabel Crawford finished fifth. Montini won the Inter-Ac JV race on Monday, while Coupas, Crawford and Joyce all placed top-10.
The varsity boys team, which finished a close second in the Inter-Ac championships on Monday, placed fourth out of 14 teams at PAISSA. Sophomore Finn Glew took the top spot for Penn Charter, finishing 14th with a time of 18:05 and earning second team all-state distinctions. Freshman Oliver Leedale-Brown came in 16th and made second team all-state, and sophomore Drew Gillespie came in 23rd. Glew and Leedale-Brown both finished top-10 in Inter-Ac champs.
