This week, girls basketball is in Phoenix, Arizona, for the Nike Tournament of Champions. The team started off with a decisive 56-20 win over Eaglecrest High from Denver. In game two, PC played Chapperal High, whose varsity girls team is currently ranked 14th in Arizona’s Division 6A. Charter came out on top again, this time with a final score of 51-34. The girls played a strong defense, and nine Quakers contributed to the offensive effort. Leading scorers were eighth grader Kelsey Bess (13 points, six rebounds), junior Kait Carter (11 points, eight rebounds, four assists) and junior Carmen Williams (10 points, five assists). Tonight, the girls tip off against Highland High School in the semifinals. Highland is currently ranked eighth in Arizona’s Division 6A. In league play, the girls had a big win over SCH on Monday, defeating the Blue Devils 70-14. Twelve Quakers scored baskets, and junior Hayley Hunt led with 11 points.
Boys basketball defeated Friends Central 72-55 on Wednesday in Dooney Field House. The Quakers held a steady lead throughout the game and put forward a great team effort. Junior Ryan Holmes led the scoring with a staggering 27 points, while junior Aaron Reisman and freshman Isaiah Grimes contributed 10 each.
