Run for Peace

 

Saturday, Sept. 15, Registration 8:15 am, 5K 9 am, 1-mile, 9:05 am
Students, parents, OPCs, teachers, family, friends and East Falls neighbors are invited to be part of this 5K run or 1-mile family fun walk. The Run for Peace honors those who died on 9/11, including Peter Ortale OPC '83 and Kenny Caldwell OPC '89. Register.

 

New Parent Reception

 

Saturday, Sept. 15, 4-6 pm
All parents of new students are invited to join Head of School Darryl Ford and his wife, Gail Sullivan, in their home from for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. RSVP to Tiffani Harris.

Sign Up for Queen Lane Shuttle Service

Penn Charter provides free shuttle service for Middle and Upper School students from the Queen Lane Train Station to PC in the morning and from PC to the station in the afternoon. Based on the current SEPTA rail times, the tentative schedule would be:

 

Shuttle pickup at Queen Lane in the morning: 7:25, 7:40, 7:55 a.m.
Shuttle leaving PC to Queen Lane in the afternoon: 3:20, 3:45, 4:25, 4:50, 5:20, 5:50, 6:22 p.m.

 

At the train station, the pick-up and drop-off location is on the inbound (Midvale Ave.) side of the station. At Penn Charter, the morning drop-off is the bus lane between the Main Building and the Timmons House. The afternoon pick-up location is next to Dooney Field House.

Center City Shuttle Service

Penn Charter offers a Center City pay-as-you-go shuttle in the morning and afternoon with GPS monitoring so families can track the bus to their stop. The Center City shuttle is open to PC students in all grades. If you are interested in this service, please contact John Zurcher or Jenny Barone at 215-844-3460.

 

Adult Squash Clinics

 

Wednesdays, Sept. 26-Nov. 7, 8:15 - 9:30 am

For those parents who have a little free time on Wednesday mornings in the fall, consider joining Director of Squash Damon Leedale-Brown for some squash instruction and fitness work—a great way to start your day. These clinics would be suitable for any adults either new to the game of squash or with some experience of the game who would like to improve further. Cost for the 7-session clinic is $210. For details and to sign up, contact Damon Leedale-Brown.

Get-Acquainted Conferences (Grades 9 and 11)

 

Parents of ninth and 11th graders, If you have not done so already, please see your email to sign up for a "get-acquainted conference" with your child's advisor.

 

Registration Day Reminders

 

Tuesday, Sept. 4, Meeting Room
-- All ninth graders should report to the Meeting Room at 8:30 am. All 10-12 graders should report to Meeting Room at 9 am. Upper School students must be attired according to the new dress code (which we will review with them; parents received the dress code details in an email earlier in August).
-- Students must bring in signed copies of the Community Code and the Acceptable Use Policy, which were sent in an email to parents on Aug. 15.
-- In addition, all US students should bring in the photo order form (mailed home with the calendar) whether or not they plan to order photos, in order to expedite the picture-taking process.


Middle School

 

Back-to-School Reminders

 

Please review the upcoming back-to-school events outlined in Wilson Felter's email sent on Aug. 30. In particular:

 

-- Wednesday, Sept. 5, includes registration, ID and yearbook pictures, laptop distribution and block party. Students should bring in the photo order form (mailed home with the calendar) whether or not they plan to order photos, in order to expedite the picture-taking process. Regular dress code.
-- Students must bring the Acceptable Use Policy and Handbook Acknowledgement the first week of school. Refer to Wilson's August email if you need to download and print.
-- It is not too late to sign up for a "get-acquainted" conference on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2-5 pm.

Wednesday, Sept. 5, 8:15 am, Chigwell Close
On the opening day of school for grades 1-5, enjoy breakfast treats and coffee with fellow parents in Chigwell Close.

 

Wednesday, Sept. 12, 8:15 am, Timmons House (3850 The Oak Road)
On the first day of school for pre-K and kindergarten, join fellow parents for refreshments and conversation at Timmons House, followed by new parent orientation at 8:45 am.

 

Pre-Travel Soccer

 

Sundays, 1-2 pm, Sept. 9-Oct. 28
An 8-session, weekly intramural soccer program at Penn Charter for boys and girls born in 2010-2012. Cost: $140. Register.

 

Girls on the Run

 

Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3-4:30 pm, Sept. 18-Dec. 2
Lower School will continue its chapter of Girls on the Run (GOTR), a nationally acclaimed program that offers a 10-week curriculum designed to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles for girls. We've had strong interest and will again have a team of 15 girls from grades 3-5 for our third year of the program. Kellyn Zeuner and Sarah Black, Lower School teachers, will be leading the program at PC along with volunteer coaches from GOTR. The program begins on Tuesday, Sept. 18 and will meet Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. There is a mandatory culminating GOTR 5K run on Dec. 2 at the Navy Yard. There is a $175 registration fee, please contact Kellyn Zeuner if financial assistance is needed. Register


Full-Day Child Care: Friday, Sept. 14

 

The After-School Program offers age-appropriate full-day child care for Lower School students on non-instructional days. These full-day child care days are made available for the convenience of parents. On Friday, Sept. 14 (Goal-Setting Conference Day), child care will be available 8 am-6 pm for grades 1-5. In order for a child to attend, a parent must complete the full-day child care contract. Please e-mail Kathy MacMurray with any questions.

 

Also, don't forget to register for the After-School Program if you plan to sign up.


Chess Club (Grades 2-5)

 

Fridays, Sept. 21 - Nov. 30, 7:15-8:05 am; Lower School After-School Room
Lower School is again offering a chess club for interested students in grades 2-5, taught by Ross Colby, chess coach. Cost is $75 for 10 weeks. Contact Charlie Kaesshaefer to reserve a space. This chess club will be part of a local independent school league, and participants can choose to play in tournaments once a month (usually on a Saturday). All levels welcome. Other sessions are Jan. 4 - March 15 ($75); and April 5 - May 31 ($50). Try one session at a time or plan to do all three.

 

Squash Clinics


Tuesdays, Sept 18-Oct. 30, 3-4 pm (7 weeks)

Our successful squash clinics continue with sessions suitable for any Lower School student, including those looking for their first taste of squash and those who already have experience of the game through prior clinics, coaching or school squash. While the clinics are primarily aimed at grades 1-3, any interested fourth and fifth graders are also welcome to attend. Cost for the 7-session clinic is $190, and places will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis. Clinics will be run by Director of Squash Damon Leedale-Brown, with assistance from some of our leading Upper School varsity squash players. Damon has experience at the very highest level of coaching and training in the sport, and works with many of the top juniors in the USA. For more details and to sign up, contact Damon Leedale-Brown.
