Note: If your student of any age left something behind in the Dining Hall, it might have ended up in the Upper School lost and found. At the end of the year, remaining items are donated. Service Opportunities We Need Your Used Stamps The Microfinance Club is teaming up with second grade to collect stamps for the Right Sharing of World Resources, a Quaker nonprofit organization. Collected stamps will be sold, and the money will help provide loans to women in Kenya, India and Sierra Leone working to support their families and communities. Place stamps in the collection box by the Center for Public Purpose in the Upper School. Thank you, and please email the Center for Public Purpose with any questions. Collecting Donations of Men's Clothing Through May 29, Upper School Lobby The Brother House, a social club in Norristown for homeless men, is in need of used men's clothing in neat condition, sizes small to 3XL. If you can help, please deposit donations in a clearly marked box in the Upper School lobby. This effort is organized by a student working with Brother House for his senior project. Yearbook Delivery
Seniors receive their personalized copy of the 2019 Class Record today, Friday. Distribution of pre-ordered yearbooks to grades PK-11 will take place in each school division on Tuesday, May 28. These lists are students who have pre-ordered books: Lower School; Middle School; Upper School. Cash sales of the limited supply of extra books will take place on Wednesday morning, May 29, outside the dining hall, at $75 per book: first come, first served. Year-End Assessments Upper School year-end assessments (exams) will be held from Thursday, May 30, through Wednesday, June 5. Below are some of the general details, and Here is the year-end assessment schedule, with some general details. Besides exams or other final assessments, all other work for full-year and/or required semester courses will be due no later than Friday, May 24. Before your student heads out for the summer, check out summer reading and math. Required summer reading and math assignments are posted online for the Upper School. Pottery Camp Ages 12-15; July 8-19 In this two-week summer camp, kids will learn to wedge clay, center it, throw a basic cylinder, pull and attach handles, and apply surface treatments such as slips, textures, carving and glazing. Camp is open to those with no experience and to more advanced potters. Details. More specialty camps, many up to age 15, available at penncharter.com/summercamp. Final Exams and Closing Assembly Friday, May 31 through Wednesday, June 5 All Middle School students will be engaged in school activities and exams from 8 am to 12:30 pm on Friday, May 31, through Wednesday, June 5. Dismissal is at 12:30 pm on those days, and Penn Charter buses and the PC Center City Shuttle will run at 12:45 and 3:20 pm. District and township buses will run on their regular schedule at about 3 pm. If necessary, your child can remain on campus in Sanctuary until 3 pm. (Please note: Due to the Upper School exam schedule, beginning Thursday, May 30, there will not be a 5:30 pm late bus.) Sixth grade Seventh grade Eighth grade On Thursday, June 6, the Middle School Closing Assembly and celebration of our eighth graders is in the Kurtz Center, 9-10:30 am. Students are expected to arrive in special dress at the usual time of 8 am on Thursday, and sixth and seventh graders can depart at the close of the assembly, at about 10:30 am. Eighth graders and their families are invited to a reception in the Rosen Atrium of the Middle School building, 10:30-11:30 am. Summer Reading and Math Required summer reading and math assignments are posted online for Middle School students. Remember to click on the grade your child will be entering in fall 2019 to view the list. Chess Camp Ages 7-15; July 8-12 or July 22-26 (two sessions) Play tournament-style recorded chess with chess clocks, analyze and assess your games, study the games and lessons of the grandmasters. Returning Library Books As the school year draws to a close, all Lower School library books are due by Tuesday, May 28. That week will be "Library Stewardship Week," and when students return all of their library books and magazines, they will receive a small thank-you gift for demonstrating good stewardship. (This ends on May 31.) All books that remain on students' accounts will be considered lost, and letters detailing the amount owed will be sent home. Thank you for your help in returning library books! We will again be allowing students to check out books over the summer! If your child's account is in good standing (all books have been turned in and there are no outstanding fines), starting on June 3, he or she will be able to check out books during the last week of school. If you would prefer that your child not have this privilege, please contact Leticia Carter by May 31. Art Teachers Need Paper Grocery Bags
Lower School needs brown paper bags! Please send in at least one paper bag per student so the Lower School art teachers can wrap your child's treasures to bring home. Performing Arts Camp Ages 6-14; July 1-26 This year's full-scale musical production will be Disney's Aladdin, Jr. Campers begin each day in classes learning about the craft of theater and developing their performance skills. In the afternoon, they launch into rehearsals or camp activities, or participate in weekly workshops.
