Pre-K to 12 Cradles to Crayons Penn Charter Family Service Day Saturday, Oct. 5, 9:45 am-12 pm; 4700 Wissahickon Ave. (Entrance on Roberts Ave.) Join PC families (pre-K to 12) and support Cradles to Crayons for a morning of volunteering and service. We will be sorting clothing, cleaning shoes and creating care packages for Philadelphia's most vulnerable youth. If you and your family are able to participate, please sign up. All are welcome! To kick off this event, we are hosting a clothing drive to support Cradles to Crayons, Sept. 16 to Oct. 5. Please review the items accepted. Program for Parents: The Stressed Years of Their Lives
Monday, Sept. 23, 6:30-8 pm; Friends Select School, Blauvelt Theatre Adolescent mental health expert Anthony Rostain and family therapist B. Janet Hibbs, authors of The Stressed Years of Their Lives: Helping Your Kid Survive and Thrive During Their College Years, will discuss their recently published book, which is intended to help students and parents cope with the stress and anxiety associated with college. The book will be available for purchase, and a book signing will follow the presentation. This event is open to the general public. Register. Wednesday, Sept. 4 - First day of school for all Middle School students, including registration, ID pictures (bring your picture form, which was mailed home), laptop distribution and block party. If your child is using a personal laptop, rather than leasing one from school, be sure to bring it. All students should bring a writing utensil and a small notebook. Regular dress code; students may bring a change of clothes for the block party (athletic attire is okay). Lunch is provided for all students. No sanctuary today.
Thursday, Sept. 5 - First official day of classes for Middle School students, including the All-School Assembly at 8:45 am. Special dress day. Students should have all materials and books. Sanctuary is open.
Friday, Sept. 6, 8:10-2:55 pm - Classes will operate on a Blue Monday schedule so that all academic classes meet. This means students will be dismissed at 2:55, which is different from all other Fridays going forward, when students will be dismissed at 2:35. (See Wilson Felter's Aug. 3 email for details.) Sanctuary is open. After-school sports begin on Monday, Sept. 9.
Drop and Stops Wednesday, Sept. 4, 8:15 am; Chigwell Close On the opening day of school for grades 1-5, enjoy breakfast treats and coffee with fellow parents in Chigwell Close. Wednesday, Sept. 11, 8:15 am, Timmons House (3850 The Oak Road) On the first day of school for pre-K and kindergarten, join fellow parents for refreshments and conversation at Timmons House, followed by new parent orientation at 8:45 am. Chess Club (Grades 2-5) Fridays, Sept. 20-Dec. 13, 7:15-8:05 am; Lower School After-School Room Lower School is again offering a chess club for interested students in grades 2-5, taught by Ross Colby, chess coach. Cost is $100 for 10 weeks. Contact Daniel Stahl to reserve a space. This chess club will be part of a local independent school league, and participants can choose to play in tournaments once a month (usually on a Saturday). All levels welcome. Other sessions are Jan. 10-March 13 ($100); and April 3-May 29 ($75). Try one session at a time or plan to do all three. Girls on the Run (Grades 3-5) Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3-4:30 pm, Sept. 24-Dec. 5 This fall, Lower School will continue its chapter of Girls on the Run (GOTR), a nationally acclaimed program that offers a 10-week curriculum designed to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles for girls. There will be a lottery for girls who will be in grades 3-5 next year. Whitney Kerner and Sarah Black will lead the program at PC. Details in this email to parents last spring. Full-Day Child Care: Friday, Sept. 13
The After-School Program offers age-appropriate full-day childcare for Lower School students on non-instructional days. These full-day child care days are made available for the convenience of parents. On Friday, Sept. 13 (Goal-Setting Conference Day), child care will be available 8 am-6 pm for grades 1-5. In order for a child to attend, a parent must complete the full-day child care contract. Please e-mail Kathy MacMurray with any questions.
