Lower School Upcycled Products

Three 5th grade girls have finally made their reusable utensil holder idea a reality! The idea emerged last year when Addy, Toby and Ilyana were in 4th grade, and they were outraged by the amount of single-use plastic that was being used in our cafeteria. They came up with this idea and the beginnings of a prototype was in the works until Covid resulted in hitting the pause button. The girls never lost their vision and have picked up this year from where they left off. They are committed to only using repurposed materials, and luckily discovered leftover denim from an Upper School Sole Hope project. The sewing is now happening and these chic, trendy and beautiful utensil holders are finally being created.

You can purchase these newly created sustainable holiday gifts at our students created and run website: PC Student Marketplace. These girls became interested in environmental issues in first grade, when their grade led the school’s Terracycle project. Then in 3rd grade, they spent a whole unit learning about the widespread and toxic nature of plastic pollution. They have carried their vision and passion for helping the environment right into their final year of Lower School. Their hope is that this will not only be a desirable product encouraging people to use reusable cutlery, but also a tool for future education about sustainable practices and living.
