Sixth grade students collaborated with art and QUADS [Quakerism Arts Design and Service] teacher to create terrariums. As part of their year-long study of environmental issues, student crafted these terrariums as part of a science lab, to observe earth's natural processes by combining the different biospheres.
As a culminating project for a unit of sustainability, sixth grade students used the popular game MineCraft to virtually build an eco-friendly house of the future.
Students considered existing sustainability practices for their MineCraft homes, which included grey water systems, alternative energy sources, sustainable building materials, native plant gardens, farms and more. This unit ties in to the sixth grade capstone project on food insecurity, as students considered costs and benefits for providing affordable eco-friendly homes across Philadelphia.
