As a child, I was encouraged to turn over rocks, dig in the sand, swim in the lake and hike in the woods to explore nature. These early experiences helped me to wonder “why?” often and, as I grew, to seek explanations in science. Throughout college I aspired to follow in the footsteps of marine biologist Sylvia Earle or limnologist Ruth Patrick. While my career path took a different turn here at P.C., I remain convinced that kids need room to explore their interests, to ask why often, and to have committed teachers to guide their intellectual, physical and spiritual growth.
