At Friends Multicultural Day, an annual student-led teaching and learning event that celebrates and fosters dialogue about diverse backgrounds, traditions, and cultures, our keynote speaker was Kamal L. Marell OPC '06. Marell is a Philadelphia native and has over a decade of professional experience in child welfare, public education, youth advocacy, and community partnerships. He is the Executive Director of The Monkey & the Elephant, a cafe that employs youth who have aged out of the foster care system. He spoke to students about how his education shaped his opportunities, and advised them: "Don't be afraid to share your vision and voice with the world."
The day also featured 37 student-led presentations, with topics ranging from "Symbolism and Impact: Analyzing Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl Halftime Performance" to "Celebrating Indian Culture: Holi, Diwali, Art and Empowerment," "Slime and Sustainability," "Celebrating Queerness, History and Self-Expression," "Soul Food and Storytelling," and "Redlining and Green Spaces: Exploring the Impact on Communities and Public Parks." The day concluded with student performances, including the Quakers Dozen, several duets, bass and guitar solos, and renditions of both classic and contemporary songs.
Thanks to everyone involved for making it an educational and inspiring day, showcasing the wide range of stories, cultures and passions we have at Penn Charter!
