Flag, Theme, Music and Cheers for 2011-2012
In remarks to students, faculty and staff gathered for the All-School Assembly, Head of School Darryl J. Ford introduced the theme for the 2011-2012 academic year: the Quaker testimony of integrity.
“As we enter this new school year and explore the testimony of integrity, it is my hope that we all will be truth-telling; that we all will be fair; that we all will act honestly with each other; and that our relationships with each other will be upright, reflecting the Inner Light found within each of us," Ford said at the conclusion of a lesson on integrity that featured the tale of a goatherd, complete with a whistle and horn.
"With this hope, I wish each and every one of you a successful year of learning, growth, friendship and much happiness.”
The assembly, traditionally held in the morning, was postponed until 2 p.m. because heavy rain, flooding, fallen trees and traffic jams complicated the morning commute for almost everyone on campus.
However, other traditions were observed: Overseer Jane Evans welcomed students on behalf of the school’s governing board and advised them to “smile, and be a good friend.” Senior Class President Ed Malandro won a loud cheer from the assembled seniors when he was introduced.
"Have pride in what you do and who you are," Malandro told his class. "Never cheat yourself out of anything, always strive to put forth your best effort. Never leave anything up to luck; when it comes to luck you make your own."
"Everybody will make mistakes; it is your job to own up to those mistakes and to learn from them — they will be your greatest lessons. Always be true to who you are and what you stand for. Integrity is a guideline, a benchmark, a point of reference; it is something we use to make decisions that are based on truth and honesty."
And the Quakers Dozen performed beautifully, singing the hymn "Be Still, My Soul."
