Teachers at "William Penn Academy" drive all the laughs in Schooled, the new series co-created by Adam Goldberg OPC '94. Set in 1990-something, Schooled, a spinoff of The Goldbergs, follows the eccentricities and crazy personal lives of fictional teachers inspired by Goldberg's very own PC teachers Rick Mellor OPC '69, Charlie Brown Hon. 1689 and Liz Flemming. These mentors at William Penn Academy are heroes to their students.
In the premiere episode, “Be Like Mike,” which airs Wednesday, Jan. 9, at 8:30 p.m., the plot includes a student character inspired by PC graduate and Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan OPC '03.
Look for a motivational exchange between Coach Mellor (Bryan Callen) and high-school student Matty (Hunter Doohan), in which Matty is influenced by Michael Jordan and wants to be the standout athlete on his school’s basketball team.
“If you have a team, you’re never alone,” Coach says.
“Why do you care so much?” Matty replies.
“You’re the best athlete I ever coached,” Coach responds. “And, at this level, you can do it all on your own. But, if you go pro, you’re going to need to rely on a team. Until you learn that, I’ll never give up.”
“Matt was a very talented athlete that always put his teammates and team first,” recalled his real-life teacher and coach, Rick Mellor. “One thing that stood out about Matt, no matter what the sport, was his athletic aptitude. He just seemed to be one step ahead of everyone else during a game. He was also a student of the game who worked his butt off and improved his skills every year.”
As a professional football player, Ryan was named the National Football League’s Most Valuable Player on Feb. 4, 2017, a day before playing in the Super Bowl.
While at Penn Charter Ryan was a three-year starter and earned All-East honors from Laurent Lemming Prep Football Report. He captured All-Southeastern Pennsylvania accolades as a senior quarterback in addition to receiving All-City first-team honors in 2002 and second-team recognition in 2001. A three-time All-League selection, he threw for more than 1,300 yards with nine touchdowns as a senior, finishing his career by completing more than 52 percent of his pass attempts during all three seasons at the helm. Ryan played football, basketball and baseball while in high school and was named the captain of all three teams his senior year. In the 2002-2003 school year, he was the quarterback of the football team, played small forward on the basketball team, and was a pitcher and a shortstop on the baseball team.
“Be Like Mike” was written by Marc Firek and directed by David Katzenberg. Schooled was created by Adam F. Goldberg and Marc Firek.
