Artist Statement

My inquiry is, how can I use charcoal and mixed media to tell the story of interconnection? Through my exploration I wanted to carry over visual elements from one piece to the next. This question evolved from an original question that explored the dichotomy between the micro and the macro. While exploring this relationship I found myself drawn to the evolution of steps from the micro to the macro. This led me to create a new investigation that allowed me to explore how everything in the universe is connected. This is important to me because I have always been interested in how everything in the universe can connect in unexpected ways. My investigation started out with me using oil pastels and pens for stippling, as seen in artwork #1. But as my question evolved so did the types of materials I used. I wanted to experiment with charcoal. Artwork #2 shows my first attempt at charcoal and the technique I used for most of my pieces. I also played around with the ways in which the pieces connected, for example, #8 connects to #9 because he is giving her the flowers, but originally I tried having the petals fall off the flowers into a pond.
