Great Day Is for All!

Head of School Darryl J. Ford visited Reverend Julian Alexander OPC '34, our oldest alum, at Alexander's home in Florida.

Rev. Alexander wants us all to know that Great Day to Be a Penn Charter Quaker is for everyone! Watch his message

You can follow all the fun and excitement on March 15 online by checking back here, or by watching #GreatDayPC on social media. Rev. Alexander reports that he watched all the action roll in from his iPad last year and will do so again. It sure is a Great Day to Be a Quaker when we've got MANY awesome OPCs!

What I Love, from a PC Parent

Middle School parent Crystal Lucas sent this heartfelt message about why she loves Penn Charter.

Testimonials like this are incredible reminders of why it's a great day to be a Penn Charter Quaker.

My son Isaiah is a 7th grader here at PC. Although we just began our PC journey last year and are still a fairly new PC family, I've already developed a list of things that touch me so affectionately about this community.

I love that when I drop my son off each morning, I know that he is going into the caring and capable arms of people who really want to see him succeed.

I love that when I have a question about anything, I always feel my concerns are taken seriously and listened to with care.

I love that in such a short time, my son has made friends and genuine connections with people who are so wonderfully different than he. I love how protected and safe yet unsheltered the learning environment is at PC.

But most of all, I love that no matter how many late nights he spends on homework, how tired he is during the 40-minute drive we take to get here each day, or how daunted he might feel facing a new challenge or assignment, my son tells me there's no other place he'd rather be. And for me – that's everything.

With Gratitude,
Crystal Lucas

March 15 Is a Great Day to Be a Quaker!

It's a Great Day to Be a Penn Charter Quaker!

We're at it again! We all know that every day is a great day to be a Penn Charter Quaker because of the incredible teachers, heartfelt — and hilarious! — memories of our time on campus, and the community we share.

We want to hear from you! What is your favorite memory of Penn Charter? What do you love about the school? Share your stories with the PC community!

On Wednesday, March 15, join us online and on social media to tell us what you love about PC and see what others are sharing. Share your memories of PC with us, get a peek into current campus life and make a gift to Penn Charter.

How do I participate?

Check out this page throughout the day to see the collection of memories, progress, and new videos and photos!

Share your stories with us by posting a comment on this moderated blog, or via social media or email. Tag @PennCharter or use #GreatDayPC on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. (Your account must be public for us to see your posts.)

Make a gift to Penn Charter on the day to help us reach our Annual Fund goals. Each donation, from $5 to $5,000, is a gift just right!

What Is Great Day?

A day to celebrate all that we love about Penn Charter and to support our school. Our community will come together to tell stories of a favorite teacher, a joyful moment seeing your child thrive, a raucous bus ride home from a big sports win or a proud achievement from your years with PC.

As you fondly recall Old Penn Charter, support the Penn Charter of today and tomorrow.

Bach, Penn and Fitz

Who else do you know who – on the spot – can connect J.S. Bach and Wm. Penn?

Yo, Fitz!

Remember those good times in Room 109? Penn Charter singers are still making beautiful music together, most often with Joe Fitzmartin at the keyboard. Only the location has changed, to the Roberts Choral Room.

PC Faculty: Lifelong Learners

Judith Hill, our director of libraries, just began her sabbatical to visit libraries in New England and at Oxford! Sabbaticals are just one of many professional development opportunities for faculty at Penn Charter to learn new techniques, meet with peers, experience different schools and grow professionally.

It's a Great Day to Be a Quaker because our faculty strive to become even better teachers for our incredible students!

The faculty is grateful to every single OPC, parent, friend, fellow faculty member and institution who supports faculty professional development at Penn Charter. We are better because of your encouragement and your support. Thank you!

Memories from a Great Day in 1996

In April 1996, Pam Shannon organized a Health and Fitness Festival on the PC campus. Read her memories of the event below.

On April 26 and 27, 1996, PC welcomed the public to campus for the festival. Blue and yellow banners hung in the Old Gym and flags lined the walkways. A Penn Star helicopter landed on our football field and young people toured through it. PC served 1,200 free, heart-healthy lunches in the wrestling pit, which is now the Blaine A. Steinberg OPC '11 Center for Fitness and Performance.

Then-parent Ed Rendell broadcast live from the Dooney Field House on local radio station Q102, which hosted for the day. Philly Phanatic and Phillies player Gary Maddox participated in aerobic and fitness classes with students in the Athletics Center. There was even a Speedo fashion show with our seniors modeling!

Many vendors and health care providers came to the event and all health screenings, including dental, mammograms, cholesterol, blood pressure, tay sachs, etc. were free to the public. The day featured heart-healthy cooking demonstrations, massages, a golf swing tent, chiropractic care, hearing and eye tests, etc. Medical professionals spoke throughout the day in the Old Gym.

It was a great day for all!
