Girls Soccer Earns Second Consecutive State Title

On Saturday November 15th, the girls soccer team captured its second consecutive PAISSA Championship defeating Germantown Academy 3-1. The Quakers entered the game as the reigning Inter Ac Champions who defeated GA just one week prior in a nail biting 3-2 victory.  These two teams have a tremendous rivalry and the game reflected the tough, skilled, and hard working styles of both teams.

GA took an early lead in the first half with a goal. The teams continued to battle until Penn Charter’s  leading scorer and Inter Ac League MVP Jlon Flippens answered back with her first goal of the night after being dragged to the turf  to tie the game at 1-1. The teams entered halftime tied, each side having several scoring chances.

The second half proved to be just as exciting as Penn Charter dominated play and had several chances to score. It was a total team effort with wonderful leadership from captains Abby Evans and Dominique DeMarco and solid performances in each  position. Penn Charter’s defensive effort of the night was remarkable including stellar play by freshman goalkeeper Mackenzie Listan and the back  four consisting of 1st team All Inter Ac player  Dominique DeMarco, Alexis Hnatkowsky, Macaul Mellor, and Brigittie Gutpellet. Each  played hard and tough, denying GA’s attack and winning the majority of the airballs in the back. PC’s  talented midfield  led by  2nd team All Inter Ac selection Giovanna DeMarco, Hannah Fox, Eliza Jacobs and Alex Kuper was fast and skilled serving dangerous ball to the forwards and battling to win the 50/50 balls in the midfield.  Both forwards Jlon Flippens, a 1st team  All Inter Ac pick  and Frenchie Pellerito a 2nd Team All Inter Ac selection had standout performances keeping the Patriots on their heels the entire second half with dangerous scoring opportunities throughout the half.

Penn Charter finally took the lead with 27 minutes left in the game. Flippens took on three defenders and slipped a through ball to a sprinting Frenchie Pellerito who finished the game’s go ahead goal with a superb shot high in the right corner past the outstretched arms of the on-rushing GA keeper.  Jlon then put the game out of reach with her 24th goal of the season which was a spectacular finish chipping the ball over the keeper and gave Penn Charter a 3-1 lead and state championship. The girls finished the year as back to back Inter Ac and State Champions with an overall record of 16-4-2.
