Mahoney Breaks Pool Record
Jack Mahoney now stands alone. In Tuesday's boys Inter-Ac varsity swimming meet versus visiting Episcopal Academy, the senior sped to a time of 46.52 in the 100 freestyle to break the pool record of Anthony Lordi OPC '10. Jack also claimed first in the 50 freestyle (21.08) and came close to the pool record just last week by a member of SCH Academy's team (21.02).
Taking first in 100 breaststroke was junior Evan McFadden (1:03.15). In the 500 freestyle, senior Jake Brogan (5:15.42) and junior Emmet Foley (5:30.51) pulled off a one-two sweep. The team of Brogan, McFadden, Mahoney and senior Tripp Griffith captured the 200 medley relay. Boys varsity swimming lost, 101-80, while having to compete without major star Reece Whitley, a sophomore. He was in New York at a special dinner hosted by Sports Illustrated.
The girls varsity swimming fell by 110-73, but as coach Brian Hecker noted, "Last year we looked like we didn't belong in the pool with EA. But with lots of young talent this team is on the rise." Sophomore Madison Freeland won the 500 freestyle in 5:27.54 while claiming second in the 200 freestyle at 1:59.73. The medley relay team of ninth-grader Annika Murray, eighth-grader Marissa Lopez-Ona, ninth-grader Ayanna Opong and sophomore Greer Guyer recorded a time 1:57.81 while placing second. That effort, Hecker noted, was just one second off the one posted in last year's Easterns. The young ladies already mentioned also earned seconds/thirds in other events while senior Willow Tierno placed second in diving.
