Girls Softball, Lacrosse Win League Openers

Inter-Ac play has started well for two girls varsity squads.

Tuesday, softball and lacrosse made the short trek to SCH Academy and came away with wins. Softball triumphed, 11-1, in five innings, while lax used a 7-3 edge in the second half to make the final score, 12-8.

Junior righthander Faith Fenton went the distance on the mound, allowing three hits. Seniors Ayanna Matthews (two-run) and Eileen Hennessy (solo) crunched home runs while junior Brigitte Gutpelet went 4-for-4 with three doubles and two RBI.

As the first half of the lacrosse contest ended, PC found itself reeling after the Blue Devils created a 5-5 tie thanks to three very late goals in a 19-second span.

Thereafter, junior Macaul Mellor (three), junior Courtney Cubbin and senior Hannah Fox (two apiece) found the net again and again (add five more agains) as PC closed things out in strong fashion. Overall goal totals for the members of that trio: Fox 4, Mellor and Cubbin 3. Except for the brief struggles, goalie Hayley Hunt, an eighth grader, turned in a strong performance.

Boys lacrosse also hit the road – down to St. Augustine Prep, in deep South Jersey – and lost by a 10-5 score.
