Student-Faculty Hoops Support Big Climb
If Bianca Bryant ever runs for office, here's hoping she receives your vote.
Bianca is a ninth grader at Penn Charter and on Saturday, with primary help from classmate Duncan Glew, she held a Big Climb Philly basketball tournament to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the Big Climb event on April 23. Photos of teams, action, organizers.
The 4-on-4 tourney, which ran from a shade past 4 p.m. to roughly 6:15, featured nine teams – eight with students and one with teachers. Bianca said just under $450 was raised from participation fees, admission charges and snack sales.
The eight student teams played seven crosscourt games – quarters, semis and a final. The student champs – seniors Jake McCain and Iggy Quinn, juniors Luke Stansfield and Adam Holland, and soph Terence Thompson – then fell to the teachers – Bryan Skelly, Wilson Felter, Joe Acquaviva, Allen Vandegrift and Ben Dziedzic – in a fullcourt contest.
Right beforehand, as the student title was being decided, the teachers got a chance to warm up while playing a team that included players from losing squads in the quarters and semis.
Congrats to all participants, referees Chris Burnett (teacher) and Hannah Fox (star senior athlete), and those who handled the scoreboard/clock/etc., administrator Ed Foley and handyman Paul Hart.
Many players were involved in spring sports activities earlier in the day, so those kids deserve extra praise for making the commitment and sticking with it.
And when it comes to Bryants . . . Bianca>Kobe! (smile)
