Wins for Softball, Boys Lacross
The unthinkable almost happened Monday.
Penn Charter's boys varsity lacrosse team hosted SCH Academy In the first round of the Inter-Ac Challenge and the first quarter almost ended with nary a goal. Then, with 43.9 seconds left, the Blue Devils claimed a 1-0 lead.
Bad omen? Nope. The Quakers pumped home the next four goals en route to a 7-5 victory.
PC entered the tourney as the No. 7 seed and its next game, a quarterfinal vs. No. 2 Haverford School, will unfold Wednesday, 5 o'clock, at The Proving Ground, 707 Conshohocken Road, in Conshohocken. The semis and final will be played Friday and Sunday at Villanova University.
In Monday's game, seniors Cody Sweeney and Drew Gallant scored two goals apiece, and juniors Luke Stansfield and Mac Wilson, and soph Blake Target took care of the others. Wilson added two assists and senior Sean McKee made 10 saves.
Varsity softball coasted to a 15-1, five-inning win over visiting Germantown Academy.
The Quakers (16-0 overall) are 10-0 in Inter-Ac play with two games remaining.
Junior Faith Fenton pitched the first three innings, allowing one hit while raising her records to 10-0/12-0. Senior Ayanna Matthews turned three hits (one double) into three RBI and scored the same number of runs. Junior Abby Cohen (4-for-4), ninth grader Abbie Quinn and seniors Dev Loftus and Eileen Hennessy all earned two RBI while junior Brigitte Gutpelet went 3-for-4 and scored three runs.
Tennis Update: Senior Nirvikar Singh and junior Greg Zlobinsky took third place at Inter-Ac Doubles Championships.
