Thursday Wrap-up: Soccer, Field Hockey

William Penn Charter School Philadelphia Quaker Inter-Ac soccerThe Hnatkowsky surname routinely makes appearances in these SportsZone nuggets because Mike (a k a "Neeko"), a senior and four-year starter, is a productive quarterback for Penn Charter's football squad.

Well, Mike has a senior sister, Lexi, and Thursday she gained attention while playing soccer.

As girls soccer bested visiting Notre Dame, 2-0, to clinch at least a share of the Inter-Ac championship at 9-1 with two games remaining (on the road vs. SCH and Germantown Academy), Lexi assisted on the first goal and scored the second. Her partners were eighth grader Kait Haughey (goal) and soph Emma Maley (assist). Senior Mireyah "Rey" Davis fired the shutout.

Also on campus, boys soccer hosted Barrack Hebrew Academy in the first round of the PAISAA tourney and recorded a 2-1 victory.

Junior Connor Sullivan (feed) and senior Max Jacobs (score) teamed up for the first goal. Junior Andrew Morris tallied the second.

Though field hockey dropped an 8-0 decision at Notre Dame, coach Steve Wagner, via senior manager Daisy Slawek, said senior goalie Janelle Sullivan resembled "a wall."

He added that senior Courtney Cubbin and junior Catherine "Cat" McInerney "were defensively consistent and steady. They really brought our team up to a higher level because of their efforts. They were extremely reliable today . . . Not one player gave up."

Our school cheer is: Go Charter!

We appreciate the student athletes who are now powering PC to great feats, and look forward to welcoming those who will do so in the future. Also, of course, we eternally appreciate the efforts of all OPCs!
