Defense Impresses in Win over Lawrenceville

penn charter football, inter-ac

For the second consecutive season, Penn Charter's football squad has roared to a 4-0 start.

In the win that assured this year's hot start, the defense mostly sparkled. Friday, in a game with a 2 o'clock start, the Quakers edged visiting Lawrenceville Prep (NJ), 20-17, and made tackles behind the line of scrimmage no fewer than 15 times. Soph Kyle Jones (2 1/2) and junior Gavin Tygh (1 1/2) were the leaders in that category and they combined to provide heroics on a scoring play late in the first quarter. After Jones forced a fumble, Tygh picked up the ball and motored 18 yards for a touchdown.

Late in the game, after PC's lead had been cut to 20-17, Lawrenceville had two last possessions. Frosh Aaron Maione (above) ended the first with an interception and the second was terminated thanks to a combo stop by Tygh and junior Ryan Maloney.

Junior Edward Saydee paced the offense with 123 tough yards and a 44-yard score on 33 carries. Senior Will Samuel passed for 94 yards and soph Ryan Bradby added two apiece of PAT and field goals.

Thursday, field hockey hit the road and was blanked by Agnes Irwin, 6-0.
