Late Heroics Earns Boys Hoops Overtime Win
Down by 11 points with 4:35 remaining. Down by nine with 3:10 remaining. Down by six with 18 seconds remaining.
Then? Three-point bucket by senior Mason Williams (pictured above). Steal by soph Ryan "Pooch" Holmes. Another three-pointer by Williams.
Those heroics sent Tuesday's boys basketball game at Shipley into overtime. Soon, Penn Charter was heading home with a stirring 78-74 victory.
Williams scored 31 points and packed 16 (with five threes) into the fourth quarter. He also successfully shut down Shipley star Sam Sessoms, who had to settle for four points (no field goals) over the last 12 minutes.
Five guys combined for all of PC's points. Holmes notched 19, seniors Will Samuel and Dylan Topaz halved 20 and junior Ryan "Zingy" Maloney had eight. The latter added nine rebounds.
Girls squash also won a tight one.
Despite having to go without upper-rotation players in junior Hatti Specter (ill) and freshman Amanda Cowhey (still out with a concussion), the Quakers nipped visiting Germantown Friends, 5-4.
As noted by coach Damon Leedale-Brown, junior Elisabeth Ross, in the No. 1 slot, secured the win with a victory over another nationally ranked competitor.
Coach Leedale-Brown also doled out major credit to senior Charlotte Murray, who toughed out a five-game win against an experienced opponent. The other winners were juniors Mia Bezar and Alexa Lenfest and senior Gwen Davis.
Boys squash was blanked at Episcopal, 9-0.
Soph Jack Kennedy, recently moved up from the JV, extended his match to five games. Seniors Marco Rodriguez and Marker Angelakis fell in four.
