Basketball, Wrestling Weekend Summary

penn charter basketball, inter-ac

Saturday, Penn Charter's boys basketball team entered game No. 4 of a two-day showcase event at Germantown Academy knowing a weekend wipeout was possible.

Then the guys responded, impressively.

The Quakers tamed Palumbo, of the Public League, 71-39, and led by 33 points before the medium to deep subs finished out the game.

Senior Mason Williams set a wonderful early tone, draining four three-pointers in the first quarter en route to a final total of 19 points. Senior Will Samuel and soph Ryan "Pooch" Holmes halved 28 points while junior subs Ryan "Zingy" Maloney and Brendan Thomas snagged eight and six rebounds, respectively.

The girls fell to Pennington (NJ), 63-48, despite a 27-point effort by soph Carmen Williams, Mason's sister.

Both teams had lost in Friday's games. More photos of girls JV and varsity, and boys varsity.

As noted by coach Pete Shaifer, the wrestlers left Archbishop Ryan with a bitter sweet taste in their mouths.

Reason: Though the Quakers won 26 of 27 actual bouts, many forfeits due to a shortage of competitors caused losses to Franklin Towne Charter (48-36), Overbrook (27-25) and Germantown Friends (42-30).

Seniors Alex Koenig/Dante DiStefano and soph Matt MGlinchey all went 3-0 with nothing but pins. Junior Sam Shentov and senior Jordan Steinhouse also were perfect. Soph Jess Anderson, despite being forced to wrestle up to 126 pounds in two of his three matches, compiled a 2-1 mark.
