Look Back: Harris, Soens, Free-Throw Wonders
Over the last three seasons, Penn Charter's boys basketball team has shot as many as 33 free throws three times.
Meanwhile . . .
In the 1970-71 season, star senior guard Billy Harris launched that many in one game.
On Dec. 30, 1970, Harris shot 29-for-33 at the line (88 percent) and finished with 51 total points as the Quakers blasted Springfield Montco, 106-60, to win the championship in the Oreland Lions Tournament.
Harris led the state in scoring that season with a 33-point average and his high game was a school-record, 65-point outburst vs. long-closed Germantown Lutheran Academy. (He is shown above in a photo from the Class Record.)
That effort eclipsed a 63-pointer by Bill Soens vs. Germantown Academy in 1963. That's still the Inter-Ac record. (Soens, below in 1963 yearbook photo, is in front row, fourth from left.)
By the way, the at-least-33-FTs feats have all occurred this season. PC went 27-for-34 vs. Shipley, 24-for-33 vs. GA and 18-for-33 vs. SCH Academy. Those first two games required one overtime session.
