January Update

As the cold continues and we hope to avoid another snow storm, PC winter teams stay busy. The girls’ basketball game with Springside, originally scheduled for January 11, was postponed due to snow and they played last Thursday. The girls ran into an improved Springside team. Springside was the beneficiary of the Cardinal Dougherty closing and three top players transferred to Springside. However, our girls prevailed in a close game to secure a 38-35 victory. The following Saturday, the girls defeated Winslow Twp., N.J., 55-40, in a Philly University Showcase event. Top scorers for PC were Brianna Butler (21 points) and Dianna Thomas-Palmer (14 points). Boys basketball put it all together in the second half on Friday night. A large and spirited student body cheered loudly as the boys took down arch rival, Germantown Academy, 44-42, in the Graham Athletics Center gym! 10th grader, Mike McGlinchey, had 10 rebounds and 21 points. Also on Friday, varsity wrestlers Steve Miller and Joey Woodruff won their bouts, but the team lost to a very strong GA squad.

Kudos go out to 12th graders, Michael Baron and John Loughery. This Saturday, Michael will be recognized by the Pennsylvania State Coaches Association as a member of this year’s All-State soccer team. Michael also finished his PC soccer career by being named to the SEPA first team, and as the MVP of the InterAc League. John Loughery received the Mini-Maxwell Award at the Maxwell Club’s 26th Annual Awards Banquet in Atlantic City, January 13th.

The spirit of Penn Charter athletics is built on a storied tradition of excellence and the belief that the interplay of academics, arts and athletics leads to strong, creative, resilient and flexible people.

Skilled teachers and coaches help our students understand – whether on the playing field or in the classroom – how to collaborate and compete, how to win with grace, and how to handle challenges and setbacks.

Our school cheer is: Go Charter!

We appreciate the student athletes who are now powering PC to great feats, and look forward to welcoming those who will do so in the future. Also, of course, we eternally appreciate the efforts of all OPCs!
