Spring Break Arrives Soon
We begin our annual spring break at the close of school Thursday. This much anticipated break in the school schedule allows some down time for the academic schedule but not for our teams. Varsity baseball will be leaving on Thursday for a week in Florida. Coach Rick Mellor and his staff will accompany the team to Clearwater, Florida. Daily workouts and practices will occur in and around the Phillies spring training complex. OPC’s David Montgomery and Ruben Amaro, Jr. (former PC baseball players) are always gracious and welcoming to our team. Several games are also scheduled so keep an eye on the local papers for results.
Varsity softball will also be traveling south this spring break. Coaches Doc Mittica and Charlie Kaesshaefer will be taking the girls to Myrtle Beach, S.C. this Thursday. The team spends a long weekend practicing and playing games in what should be much better weather conditions. The team returns on Monday night and will continue to practice and play games at school during the remainder of the week.
Boys’ and girls’ track teams have meets this week which lead them to a week off during break. Head Coach Steve Bonnie’s longstanding plan to give his players the time off usually pays dividends at the end of the season. Some R & R for these kids is certainly deserved and welcomed by all.
Under new coach, Mary Fran Riffel, varsity girls’ lacrosse will be staying home during break. A full week of practices and games are planned for spring break. Coach Riffel also has plans for a fun day of team bonding and an afternoon of service at Northern Home for Children.
Varsity boys’ lacrosse will also be around school for most of the break. They have several games scheduled in the area during the week and on Friday, April 1, they board a bus for a trip to Charlottesville, VA. On this three-day trip, they will play two games, spend time together as a team and attend a UVA men’s lacrosse game. Coach McDonough’s team is off to a good start this season with excellent senior class leadership in captains Tyler White and Joey Sankey. This team has spent the last few days mourning the loss of Dan Carr, Sr. who passed away last Friday after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Dan is the father of current 11th grader, Shane, and his brother Dan (OPC ‘09). Dan was friend, volunteer coach and enthusiastic team dad. He will always be remembered as an important part of Penn Charter lacrosse.
Varsity golf and tennis will finish with practice and matches this week and then take off next week. They both resume with matches upon our return from break on April 4.
