Athletics Supports the PC Service Program
Jim Ballengee, Director of Service Learning and assistant coach for girls cross country and track wrote the following note this morning.
"I wanted to inform everyone of a great new Athletic Department initiative in conjunction with Service Learning that started last night. The 5th grade class at St. James School(new faith based school started up this fall near PC) came up to campus around 5 pm and received a soccer clinic from one of our coaches - they have sports once a week @ St. James, but are forced to use their basement with little or no equipment. Ed Foley whose leadership has been critical to this project then took them to the turf field and the track to run around. and then we all came downstairs to the cafeteria for a pizza dinner. One of the team captains, Ani Schug, talked to the students about the courses she takes, her schedule and the many activities she is involved in. After dinner we took a tour of the Upper School and talked to them about Quakerism in the Meeting Room.
Ed plans a bi-weekly schedule exposing the St. James students to a wide variety of sports and we will increasingly bring student athletes in as mentors and role models for the younger students. A number of coaches and teams have eagerly signed up already!
This is the best kind of public purpose work as evidenced by comments like, "I want to come to this school someday" and the pure joy of the kids running around a turf field which they had never seen the likes of before last night. Congrats to Ed Foley for providing the leadership for a great new initiative at Penn Charter!"
