Afternoon 2-4 pm intermediate and advanced

Limited to 10 campers. Minimum of 3 required.

Program Highlights
We are pleased to offer virtual group chess lessons for beginners, intermediate and advanced players, with a focus on strengthening chess vision, calculation, and players’ understanding of basic strategic and tactical patterns to increase skill in all phases of the game. 

Chess tournaments will be held everyday. Campers will also learn amazing chess variants including: Crazy House, Chess960, Three Check, Anti-Chess (Giveaway), Atomic and Horde. These variants will help players with their chess strategy as well as being fun for young players! 

Campers will receive individual coaching and feedback, in a no-shame, positive learning environment, where mistakes are absolutely welcome and treated as learning opportunities. All camp participants will receive tailored supplemental materials for personal practice and growth beyond the camp. 

Material Required
Chess players will need a computer or tablet with a webcam. The kids  will be using a free, child-safe, ad-free, open-source chess classroom on

Camp Staff
Carlos Santiago has been teaching scholastic chess and sharing the joy and excitement chess brings to life for more than 10 years. He has taught chess at area schools, including Penn Charter, Friends Select, Germantown Friends, and the Philadelphia School, as well as individual and group private coaching. He has been teaching chess virtually for the past few months, so he comes equipped with tested techniques to keep it fun and engaging! Carlos is also a professional violinist and brings planning and practice techniques learned in music preparation to learning chess. 

2020 Enrollment Information for Virtual, Online Camps

Enrollment is limited, so please register early. Full payment is due at time of registration in order to hold a spot for your child and is nonrefundable. We accept credit card, money order or check payable to William Penn Charter School. If registering after June 1, full payment is due in the form of a credit card or money order.
