Beginners Ukulele Camp will focus on basic skills needed to play. We will learn to play melodies like "Twinkle Twinkle," "Happy Birthday," "Hot Cross Buns" and others. These melodies will be played on one string; by doing so, the need to tune the instrument is not essential. This will be important in the beginning stages of playing. Next, we will learn how to tune the instrument. Students will need to have a clip-on digital tuner. (See materials below.) And we will also learn to play three chords. With these three chords, we can sing songs while strumming the ukulele. Songs will include: "Down by the Bay," "Old MacDonald," "This Land Is Your Land" and others. Chord playing does require the instrument to be tuned. For younger children, having an adult’s help will make this easier. This is especially true for new instruments, as the new strings will stretch quite a bit. This can be done prior to class time or at the beginning of class.
Beyond (or Advanced) Ukulele Camp is for campers who have already learned to play chords, are familiar with tuning and want to continue to learn more songs and techniques for the instrument. If you have had Ukulele enrichment at Penn Charter or participated in ukulele during Enrichment Camp in the past, this course is for you. We will be using a phone app called “Guitar Chords and Tabs” because it will allow us to look at many songs with everyone seeing the same information on their screens; it's available for iPhone and Android.
These products sold by Sweetwater, a company Penn Charter has used with very satisfactory results. They are prompt and have a knowledgeable staff.
An inexpensive Ukulele (Ukadelics) with a lot of color options:
- Kala Ukadelic Soprano
- The Snark tuner is easy to operate and easy to advise students online. It is the one Jay will use to demonstrate.
Ukulele Starter Packs:
Here are two suggestions if you would like to purchase a “starter pack”. These typically have a case, a slightly better instrument and the tuner included.
Both starter packs are fine for getting started and beyond. The Ukadelics are also fine instruments, and the Kala company is very well established in the Ukulele world.
Ukulele Camp will be directed by Jay Klales. Mr. Jay is familiar to Penn Charter families through the many music enrichments he has taught for fourth and fifth grades. These have included the ukulele, guitar and rock band enrichments. He has also taught music at PC's Enrichment Camp. You may have also seen him as the guitarist in Lower School concerts as well.
Jay is a career musician focusing on guitar, lute and ukulele. He performs and teaches in the area and has a recording of lute and recorder music on the Grffin Renaissance Label. In addition to teaching at the Settlement Music School, he ran the “Rock Shack” at the Burn Brae Camp for more than a decade and the arts camp at Chestnut Hill College.
